Festival de San Juan

Bang. Rip. Zoom. Bop. Since I arrived the streets have been littered with casings of street sold fireworks and other explosives, most of which are distributed to children under the age of 10. But, unlike the typical American child, who, unsatisfied with the distant relationship they have with there packed gunpowder, decide that fireworks may be more amusing if lit in your hand, these young Spaniards are responsible pyromaniacs, at least as much as responsibility and mania can be smashed together.
It can be said, that during the day of San Juan, as well as the 4 preceding days, there is one, city-wide, ongoing act of little terrorisms, that, if translated to U.S. color coding, would reach at least level ORANGE. These rookie transgressors, will not hestitate to disturb that quotidian tourist moment when passing by there make-shift hideouts and bunkers. Soon after, following their youthful compatriots the teens, adults, and elders take to the streets.
I did not take any photos of the actual Fiesta de San Juan, partly in fear of getting my camera stolen, but more from considering that this event, this spectacle, was created for that sole purpose. That is, to be documented either in memory, or by photo, or by sketch, in its entirety, and thus, forming a solid image of the community of Barcelona. But I realize, that all the images recorded, by whatever device, will be so alike, that it would be a challenge to differentiate one person's experience from the next's. In these moments, where your perspective of an event, somehow blends into a collective perception, I will always choose to leave my camera at home, and to recommend to those whose interest the story captures, that they see for themselves Barcelona on the longest night of the year.
